Create Flashlight Constellations

Create your own constellations using a flashlight and paper as you learn that a series of dots can be grouped together to form a picture. Try modifying this activity based on materials you already have.

This lesson is an interactive hands-on enjoyable activity. The quality of the content is organized and user friendly. This activity is fun and engaging - a great introduction about learning constellations. If unable to project the constellation on the wall, the student is able to place their cut out constellation inside a paper cup for a better and consistent viewing.

The Constellations activity can be fun and creative. The materials for this activity are easy to find; at the very least using a cardstock or cereal box and the flashlight from a phone will still accomplish the activity. If you are using a flashlight, I've learned that if the flashlight has multiple bulbs in it, as some LED flashlights do, the projections aren't very clear. So if possible use a flashlight with one light bulb. Also, using black construction paper or aluminum foil is good because it keeps the light from escaping on the sides so the projected constellation is clear. If you use aluminum foil just be careful to poke the holes gently because the foil tears very easily. Students can use their creativity and create their own constellations to punch into a cardstock and have it projected onto the ceiling.

This is a fun activity that uses many everyday activities that are very easily available. Objectives are clear, video quickly shows how to do the project, & there are even interesting cultural stories about the constellations on the printable.

This is a really good activity to do with students of any age. I have done it with 1st graders and 6th graders. I found with 1st graders that they have a lot of questions while doing this activity so be prepared! It is a great activity to do and then at night go outside and look at the stars and point out a few of the constellations. You can also read books about constellations. I think that this is a fun, engaging activity appropriate for all ages.

In this activity, you create a flashlight constellation by poking holes in cardboard and paper and covering a flashlight with it. I did not have the means to do this activity as intended due to the style of my flashlight and lack of a printer but found a workaround using a skewer, paper clip, and some cardboard. This is a good primer on constellations for young scientists that inspires wonder and creativity. I would recommend this activity for any learners interested in outer space.

Our night sky is always changing and this activity is an excellent way for you to decipher it with your child. This activity highlights four constellations, two of which are always visible from Orange County! Your child will be able to share a story and then make a template of the constellation to display on your walls using the easy to access and vibrant printable on the site. Don’t happen to have a flashlight or printer handy? No problem! You can use just about any light source in your house and make a fun lampshade. This is an activity that you can repeat over and over again with your family as new constellations will appear as the seasons change. This is an excellent way to be able to explain Earth’s place in our universe and the concept of shadows to our young scholars.
